A very common and popular treatment, porcelain veneers are typically at the top of people’s minds when they’re looking for a more dramatic transformation. Veneers are a permanent solution from our Jacksonville and Live Oak, FL, cosmetic dentists to a wide range of tooth imperfections which means hiding your smile will no longer be a go-to move. Quite the opposite, you’ll want to show it off!
Here’s what you should know about
for yourself.Purpose of Veneers
Placing a veneer on a tooth is similar to how you might put a full coverage mask over your entire face. It hides what’s underneath and gives you a new appearance. Of course, veneers are not costume masks and instead are artfully crafted “shells” made of strong porcelain that camouflage chips, cracks, small gaps, and tooth discoloration.
Veneers can also be used to cover teeth that are too small or irregularly shaped. For example, if you wish your teeth appeared slightly larger to better complement your face and give your smile more of an impact, our dentists can recommend this type of dental restoration.
Spacing between teeth can be remedied as well but the gaps do need to be minor. Larger areas left open or more in-depth alignment issues may lead to our dentists suggesting an orthodontic alternative like Invisalign® clear aligners.
How Are They Different From Dental Crowns?
Just because both procedures involve covering a tooth, doesn’t mean they’re one and the same. Porcelain veneers only go over the front surfaces of teeth whereas dental crowns cover the entire structure of the tooth for protection and added strength. Veneers are also a cosmetic treatment and though crowns can be used to hide severely stained teeth, they’re primarily applied when teeth are damaged.
Candidates for the Veneers Procedure
If you’re someone who has chipped, broken, gapped, misshapen, or stained teeth that are resistant to standard teeth whitening, the porcelain veneers procedure may be for you. Our dentists can perform an oral exam and if there are no other pressing issues, we can move forward with getting you prepped for the process.
It’s worth noting that if we do find oral health problems such as cavities or signs of gum disease, we will need to treat those first and make sure they’re resolved before veneers are put in place.
